Vernon A Hereford bull on its way to slaughter escaped around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 24, near the Burger King in Vernon from the horse trailer in which it wasACbeing transported. According to Catherine Johannes of Sparta, who witnessed the episode, two Vernon Animal Control vehicles and several police cars arrived on the scene and for the next two hours police, animal control officers and the owner of the bull attempted to recapture it. According to police reports, “The Hereford bull was running through numerous businesses in the Route 94 and County Route 515 area.” The bull, police said, “charged its pursuers several times during the pursuit.” When the animal got near Breakneck Road and still could not be captured, the owner, who was not identified by police, gave police permission to shoot it. Ptl. David Hering killed the bull, which was then loaded back on to the trailer with the aid of a tractor and removed from the scene. No charges were filed. (Photos by Catherine Johannes)
