West Milford One man has died and another is in intensive care as a result of an early morning car crash Saturday when the car they were in crashed into rocks and trees on Larsen Drive. A 16-year-old girl also landed in the hospital for less severe injuries. Cesar Vanegas, 18, died from his injures on Tuesday afternoon. Passenger Jared Fisher, 20, remains at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Paterson in intensive care. West Milford police said Vanegas was driving a 2005 Pontiac G6 at about 2:20 a.m. when he took a curve too fast, left the roadway and crashed into a wooded area, striking boulders and trees before coming to rest against a large tree trunk. It does not appear, police said, that anyone was wearing a seatbelt. Also in the car with Vanegas and Fisher was Chelsea Connelly, 16. Connelly, of Hewitt, was taken to Chilton Hospital by friends for lacerations, fractures and internal injuries. Fisher and Vanegas, both of West Milford, were unconscious and severely injured when paramedics arrived. They were taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital for head injuries, internal injuries and fractures. Shannon Hacker, daughter of the vehicle owner, reported the crash. She was not a passenger in the car at the time of the crash, according to police. When police arrived, they called two ambulances from the West Milford First Aid Squad and paramedics from Chilton Hospital, as well as three fire companies, West Milford, Apshawa and Macopin to extricate the victims. Because of the inclement weather, Vanegas and Fisher were taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital by ambulance instead of by Medivac helicopter. The initial investigation by the West Milford Crash Investigation Unit and the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office revealed that speed was a likely factor in the crash. The Passaic County Prosecutors Office is investigating. No charges have been filed at this time.
