WEST MILFORD — In an action school board member Greg Bailey jokingly called historic, the board unanimously passed the 2006/2007 proposed budget. Now the public will decide. The budget itself is $60.8 million and will represent an average annual household tax increase of $184. This falls within the budget cap mandated by the state under S1701. Although it represents yet another increase to already overburdened taxpayers, per pupil West Milford is educating its students for less than the state average. Statewide, the average district spends $11,172 per pupil. West Milford spends $10,059. Taxpayers are, however, getting the opportunity to spend more. In order to come in under the budget cap the district has put two separate questions on the ballot. The first one would add a full-time computer technician and a high school nurse. The tax impact would be $9.80 annually for the average household. The second question would cost the same average tax payer $18.60 but it would be a one-time fee. It is for replacing high school gym lockers, elementary cafeteria tables, and the planetarium projector and software. Voters will also be choosing representation. Three 3-year seats on the board are up for grabs. Incumbents Drew Murray and Greg Bailey are running for reelection. David Pry is not. The other candidates are: Michelle Fenwick, Michael Pych, James Rauth, James Foody and Barbara Carter.
