Franklin Lakes Making the most of the last days of summer, Cub Scout Pack 51 of Oak Ridge, in West Milford Township, took it’s September meeting to the great outdoors. On Sept. 17, the scouts and their families visited the Lorrimer Nature Sanctuary in Franklin Lakes. The sanctuary is one of the many New Jersey Audobon Society centers in the state. Following a tranquil opening flag ceremony, Lorrimer’s resident expert, Patrick, led a 75-minute program that taught the scouts how to make the best of a “survival situation.” The boys learned how to prioritize the basic needs of air, food, water, shelter, and a positive mental attitude. Some of the many topics covered were packing for a hike, using a map and compass, building a survival shelter, collecting water and making a fire.
