TRENTON New Jersey Senators Robert Menendez and Frank Lautenberg on Monday called on President Bush to hold oil companies accountable for rising gasoline prices, which may hit $3 a gallon this summer. In a letter sent to the president, the pair asked that Bush file a complaint with the World Trade Organization against OPEC for driving up the price of gasoline by enforcing export quotas and also called on Bush to crackdown on price gouging. Menendez has also said the President should start collecting fines that Menendez said are owed to the U.S. government by oil companies. Gov. Jon S. Corzine said that an expected jump in gas prices this summer factored into his decision to refinance the state’s Transportation Trust Fund this year rather than raise the gas tax. The average statewide price for regular gasoline on Monday was up to $2.63 a gallon, five cents higher than Sunday and 56 cents higher than a year ago, according to AAA. The highest recorded price for regular gasoline in New Jersey was $3.18 set on Sept. 10 of last year.
