WEST MILFORD Two police officers on routine patrol saved the life of a man and numerous animals when they noticed an unreported fire. Shortly after 9 p.m. on March 14, Officer Casey Casbarro saw smoke billowing from a barn at Evergreen Farms on Union Valley Road. After calling for fire companies to respond, she and Officer Michael Malfetti found the front door of the barn open. Inside there was a fire and thick smoke. They found 54 year old Peter Sabia of Jefferson sleeping under a blue tarp in the building. After rousing him and getting him out of the building, Malfetti began evacuating the small farm animals housed in the barn while Casbarro got an extinguisher out of the patrol car and began fighting the fire. The Greenwood Forest, West Milford and Upper Greenwood Lake Fire Companies responded and were able to save the structure. Michael Granatelle, owner of the property, arrived on the scene and got the remaining animals put of harm’s way. Police determined that Sabia had inadvertently started the fire when he fell asleep with a lit cigarette. Sabia did not have permission to be in the barn at the time. According to a police press release, Sabia didn’t have any means of transportation back to Jefferson and decided to spend the night in the barn rather than walk home. He was charged with criminal trespass and criminal mischief.
