West Milford School board Vice President Wayne Gottlieb asked his colleagues Tuesday night to censure fellow board member, John Aiello, for a letter Aiello wrote to local newspapers and was printed in the West Milford Messenger on April 2. Gottlieb called the letter “a blueprint for the destruction of our school district” and motioned that Aiello be censured. Board President Lynda Van Dyk said she had gotten a number of phone calls from residents after the letter appeared. She consulted the board’s attorney, Vito Gagliardi, who said he will send a letter to the board with his recommendations. Van Dyk asked that the board reserve action until that direction is received from the attorney. Trustee Tim Foley said there are probably levels of admonition and censure, adding he has never had to do this before. “We’ve never had to deal with this before because we haven’t had the behavior before,” Foley said. Gottlieb, though, wanted this board to make a decision because, as he said, it happened on their watch. He doesn’t want it carry over to the next board. Aiello, who is a frequent letter writer to local newspapers, said he usually puts a disclaimer on his letters letting readers know these are his personal opinions and do not represent the board of education. He didn’t include one with this particular letter. That, Gottlieb said, is not the problem here. He said Aiello’s letter, which was titled “Let’s take back our schools,” was an attempt to split the work force and turn one group against another. “In terms of damage done, there was a lot in just a few paragraphs,” Gottlieb said. The board will wait until the attorney makes his recommendations.
