Hopatcong downs Sparta for first-ever crown Piscataway - Hopatcong completed its first-ever gridiron double when the Chiefs edged Sparta 20-14 in overtime in the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group II championship game at Giants Stadium on Saturday. Earlier, the Chiefs had claimed their first-ever share of the Sussex County Interscholastic League crown. Trailing 14-0 before they got on the board with one minute remaining in the third quarter, Hopatcong rallied to win when Joe Anthes blasted two yards into the end zone on the first possession in overtime. Sparta’s Ryan Skorupka, who carried 21 times for 112 yards, plunged one yard for the only touchdown of the first half. He bolted 13 yards to paydirt in the third quarter and the Spartans led 14-0 when Tyler Reese flipped a two-point conversion pass to Danny D’Angelo. Chiefs' signal caller Ian Evans, who connected on 10 of 19 aerial attempts for 139 yards, tossed a five-yard TD strike to tight end Tim Stone to put the Chiefs of the board in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Evans flipped a 20-yard touchdown pass to Jon Stolarz and Joe Martinek followed with a three-yard run into the end zone off a direct snap for a crucial two-point conversion with 2:37 remaining in regulation.
