All-stars are District 20 champs

    Byram - The Sparta 8/9 Little League all-stars defeated Jefferson 18-6 Sunday night at Station Park winning the District 20 Tournament Champions Banner. The team lost the coin toss and was the visiting team on their home field, They started the game with three runs in the top of the first, added six in the second inning and finally, erupted for nine runs in the fourth to put the game out of reach. The Spartans had 14 hits including three by Jack Nelson, and two each by Anthony Longo, Mike DiMatteo, Jake Davis, Clay Forbes and Jimmy Cartier, Davis had a booming bases clearing triple. Mike DiMatteo also had a triple. Anthony Argula was the winning pitcher striking out seven Jefferson batters in four innings. Sparta was 5-1 in pool play, defeating Vernon American (10-0), Blairstown (18-4), Hobb Engler (7-3), Hopatcong (14-3) and Lackawanna (17-4). They avenged their only loss, to Frankford/Branchville, by defeating the same pitchers that had earlier shut them out by a score of 10-3 in the first round of the tournament on July 28. In the Frankford game Jack Nelson struck out 10 for Sparta, Mike DiMatteo had two hits incuding a double, and scored three runs, Clay Forbes also had two big hits. The team consists of nine year olds from the Sparta Little League, Anthony Argula, Gordy Bonker, Jimmy Cartier, Grant Cummings, Jake Davis, Tyler Dalzell, Mike DiMatteo, Clay Forbes, Anthony Longo, Jack Nelson, Jack Sember, and Mike Viggiano.
