    Newton’s Andy Latincsics led a pack of 17 local residents to the finish of the 6th Annual Ashenfelter 8K Run, crossing fourth in a field of 957 runners who completed the USATF-NJ certified championship race in Glen Ridge on Thanksgiving. The 39-year old was clocked in 25:52. Lake Hopatcong’s 40-year-old Julie Amsallen was the first local distaff runner to cross the line, placing 22nd among the 365 females in the race with a time of 35:23. Glen Ridge’s Horace Ashenfelter, the Olympic Gold Medalist that the event is named after, was one of America’s premier distance runners during the 1950s, winning 17 national championships at a variety of distances. In the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki, Finland, Ashenfelter captured in the gold medal in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, beating the favored Vladimir Kazantsev of the Soviet Union in a stretch duel to become the only American other than James Lightbody in 1904 to win that event. Ashenfelter was honored with the 1952 Sullivan Award as the nation’s outstanding amateur athlete.
