Ogdensburg - Motorcycle enthusiasts will again join the Blue Knights, Chapter IX, and the Ogdensburg Fire Department on New Year’s Day to ride the roads of Sussex County at the 32nd annual Chilly-Chili Run. Last Jan. 1, more than 900 riders took part in the event, which benefits the Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice, and participants are looking forward to this year’s 31-mile run. The Blue Knights are a world-wide organization of motorcycle enthusiasts in the law enforcement field, with 400 chapters. The Blue Knights of N.J. Chapter IX was founded in 1986 and is known for its work to benefit area charities. The men and women of the Ogdensburg Fire Dept. join forces with the Blue Knights for the event, and they also feed hundreds of hungry riders as they return to feast on chili and hot dogs. The late Bill Pierce, former chief of the Ogdensburg Fire Dept. will be remembered this year as the riders assemble before they head out. Pierce, who died earlier this year, was actively involved in the Chilly-Chili events for many years. Former Mayor Dolan, who was also a familiar face and a regular and enthusiastic attendee, will also be remembered. Dolan also passed away this year. The Chilly-Chili tradition began in 1974 when the late Dale Lewis and Ted Hessler decided to head out for a chilly morning ride over the snowy local roads. Over the years the run has become a favorite of hundreds of men and women who come out for a day of camaraderie, food, and a chance to win a 2005 Harley Davidson Softail Deluxe motorcycle. Lewis passed away in 1998. His wife, Barbara, continues to participate in the Chilly-Chili activities each New Year’s Day. The Friends of Hospice, is a group of volunteers who fund raise throughout the year for Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice. They sell raffle tickets for the Harley from January through December, and at the Chilly Chili event itself prior to the draw. The winner is drawn at the end of the festivities. Sign-up starts at 9 a.m. Jan. 1, with the ride leaving promptly at 11 a.m. Cost per participant is $20. For more information or to purchase raffle tickets, call 973-383-0115.
