Pope 12, Verona 2 Pope 14, St. Joe’s 7 Adam Monsalve established a new Pope John record of six assists when the Lions routed Verona 12-2 on Friday. Less than 24 hours later, Monsalve distributed seven assist in spurring Pope John to a 14-7 victory over St. Joseph Regional in Montvale to re-write the Lions’ record book. Monsalve, who finished the first week with seven goals and 14 assists in three games, was named the SCIL Player of the Week. Monsalve scored once in the win over the Hillbillies from Essex County and twice against the Green Knights. Dave LiLauri tallied four goals against St. Joseph Regional after two against Verona when the Lions recorded their first “W” of the campaign following an opening day setback. Corbin Falvo posted hat trick efforts in both contests when he scored three goals in each outing while Matt Johannes deposited three shots into the Green Knights’ cage. Vernon 6, Pope 5 Vernon 13, Indian Hills 2 Vernon, which toppled Pope John 6-5 in the season-opener for both teams in Tuesday, coasted to a 13-2 rout of Indian Hills in Oakland on Saturday as C.J. Flar netted five goals and dished off a pair of assists. Vic DeMaio and Rob Glander each contributed two goals and an assist, while Danny Colvin, and Tony Selimo each chipped in with a goal and two assists. Anthony Cwirko and Eric Kayough tallied goals with Dan Rawson distributing a pair of assists while Dave Corcoran and Eric Rabisz picked up assists. Goalie Jay Kral came up with seven saves. Sparta 10, Caldwell 5 Sparta opened its season with a 10-5 triumph over Caldwell on Tuesday in Sparta as Ari Young netted a game-high four goals. Nick Heckman chipped in with a pair of goals and two assists, while Kevin Echemena scored twice. Ryan Matthes and Tyler Steinetz added solo goals, with Vinny Florentino dishing off four assists. Goalie Brett Becker turned aside 13 shots on the Spartans’ cage.
