WEST MILFORD — The West Milford PAL Cavaliers will be having their first twirling clinic on Saturday, Aug. 10, at the PAL Building from 12 to 3 p.m. All girls and boys are invited to come experience the fun time. The Cavaliers will provide batons for the participants to use during the clinic.
The West Milford PAL Cavaliers is baton twirling with some dance and gymnastics choreographed together. The program runs from September through June with local, state and regional competitions starting in March and April. The group practices once a week on a Tuesday or Wednesday and competitions are on Sundays.
Did you know that the Cavaliers have been around since the 1970s? Some of you know them under different names such as the Greenwood Forest Cavaliers, West Milford Drum and Bugle and some as the West Milford PAL Cavaliers. You may have seen girls and boys twirling batons, flags, rifles and streamer in bands or even your own back yard. There are all types of twirlers. Even some famous people have been baton twirlers like Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, actresses Debbie Reynolds and Sissy Spacek, Vanna White, Stevie Nicks, Sheryl Crow, Madonna and Kelly Ripa, just to name a few.
Twirling is for girls and boys of all ages, some start as young as age 4 and others start in high school or college. Some colleges even offer scholarships for twirling.
