Netcong’s Steven Ryan finished 129thth in the record field of 37,516 participants in the 36th Annual New York City Marathon. The 25-year-old was clocked in 2:42:12, leading a pack of 41 area residents to the finish. Sparta’s Meagen Murphy was the first local female runner to cross the line. The 23-year-old was the 582nd woman in the field of 12,077 females to finish, posting a clocking of 3:39:40. In 1970, 127 runners paid a $1 entry fee to participate in the first New York City Marathon over a 26.2-mile race that looped several times within Central Park with 55 runners reaching the finish line. Six years later, the course was changed to pass through all five boroughs. A field of 2,090 runners lined up at the start for the chance to run through Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Manhattan. The expanded course attracted two-time Olympic marathon medalist Frank Shorter, along with reporters and television cameras, while thousands of spectators lined the streets and cheered the runners. Thirty-six years after its start, the NYC Marathon continues to grow and to be the leader among marathons around the world.
