Pope John swept the team titles in the 2006 Sussex County Interscholastic League Swimming Championships on Saturday at Sussex Tech in Sparta. The Lions finished first for the first time in 11 years, ending a decade-long run by Vernon in the boys’ division while the Lady Lions won the girls’ championship. Nick Ferriero, John Guze and Nikolas Lumkong were fastest the finish wall, producing gold medal performances for the Lions while Vernon’s Joe Sweeney was the only double winner. In the girls’ competition, Lenape Valley’s Melissa Flynn and Vernon’s Kellyanne Tomasula won two events apiece. Pope John’s team finish was keyed by gold medal efforts from Kristin Ferriero and Anna Susko. Vernon’s 200-meter medley relay quartet of Kellyanne Tomasula, Kim Tomasula, Brittany Lukasik and Lauren Shaw established the only new meet mark when they were clocked in 2:08.42 to snap the old mark of 2:08.70 set in 1997.
