Vernon 3, Sparta 0 Vernon rolled to a 3-0 victory over Sparta to open the 2006 SCIL field hockey campaign on Saturday in Sparta. Goalie Kaitlin Umstead turned aside all four shots on goal to not only register the shutout win but also be chosen the SCIL/Richards and Summers Player of the Week. Christine Krueger, Kaitie Lisa and Amanda Matos netted the Lady Vikings’ goals with Matos picking up an assist. Wallkill 3, Kittatinny 1 Wallkill Valley snapped a 1-1 deadlock in the second half and the Lady Rangers went on to defeat Kittatinny 3-1 as goalie Samantha Nann recorded eight saves. Amanda Nann sparked WV’s attack, scoring a goal and dishing off an assist while Jess Petronaci and Nicole Travolta added solo goals. Lauren McArthur talled the Lady Cougars’ goal. Newton 3, Jefferson 1 Newton defeated Jefferson 3-1 as Lisa Granwehr, Amanda Miller and Kim Parks scored for the Braves with Natalie Elvidge, Granwehr, Parks and Devon Westra picking up assists. Goalie Dani Jones made 10 saves. Lenape 2, High Point 1 Lisa Duckels supplied the scoring, netting both goals as Lenape Valley edged High Point 2-1. Tempe Newson was credited with both assists while goalie Samantha Merkferding stopped nine shots. PJ 4, Hopatcong 0 Goalie Gabby Luongo was credited with a shutout without making an official save as Pope John dominated Hopatcong, winning 4-0, with all four goals coming in the first half. Mallory Clark, Stephanie Hayes, Kasey Homa and Kim Numann tallied solo goals, with Homa and Melanie O’Connor credited with assists.
