WEST MILFORD — This past week, the Highlander football team completed its final game of the season against Nutley. The Highlanders fell just short of a last game victory when their final drive was stalled with one minute left on the clock. The final score was 19-14.
This week, Coach Donald Dougherty selected the entire group of seniors to be the “Players of the Week.”
"Our 14 seniors have worked diligently throughout the season to improve not only on the field, but also in the community," said Dougherty. "Our seniors were the first to participate in the Punt, Pass, and Read program where they read to various grade levels in all six West Milford Elementary Schools. These seniors also had the opportunity to attend multiple youth program games to support the future Highlander football players. (They) showed their character and leadership skills throughout the season, especially as they were the first to be a part of the football program’s new traditions for future years to follow."
Dougherty said the team suffered some tough losses throughout the season, but they never gave up.
"Although we had some tough losses this year, I am proud of how these seniors lead the other players and how they showed their fight and resilience. As their head coach, I am so proud of these young men for what they accomplished," said Dougherty. "The coaching staff and I congratulate them for all their hard work and wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors."
