Sparta 28, Lenape 7 Sparta was impressive in posting a 28-7 victory over Lenape Valley as both teams finished the afternoon at 1-1. The Spartans “rookie” backfield, led by juniors Chris Hoffman and Brendan McDonald, ground out 185 yards and went to the airways for 137 yards in posting a total offense of 322 yards against a strong Patriots’ defensive unit. McDonough connected on 13 of 20 passing attempts while Hoffman carried the ball 25 times, churning out 133 yards rushing that included TD runs of three and 27 yards. The duo shared SCIL/Richards and Summers Player of the Week honors. PJ 27, High Point 10 Pope John rolled to a 27-10 victory over High Point after the Lions led 13-10 at the intermission. Jeremy Tucker toted the pigskin 17 times, rushing for 154 yards with TD runs of 54, one, one and 37 yards as the Lions improved to 2-0. Connor McGrath, who hauled in a swing pass from Eugene McGuire and turned it into a 76-yard gain that set up one of Tucker’s one-yard blasts into the end zone, registered a pair of QB sacks, as did teammate J.D. Van Aman. Hopatcong 29, Newton 7 Hopatcong rebounded from its opening day loss to the Lions with a 29-7 triumph over Newton as Joe Martinek continued his quest for the NJ career-rushing mark by rushing for 218 yards on 27 carries and scoring on a five-yard run. Carl Juskus picked up 89 yards rushing on a dozen tries while scoring twice on runs of four and 25 yards. The Braves scored first in the opening quarter when Sam Paul hauled in a 69-yard TD bomb from quarterback Steven Zander. Jefferson 34, Wallkill 7 Jefferson cruised to a 34-7 triumph over Wallkill Valley after jumping out to a 20-0 first-quarter lead. John Kaschak, who touched the ball 11 times for 137 yards, put the first six-pointer on the board when he broke loose and scampered 74 yards to paydirt. He added a 33-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Dom Macaluso, who connected on seven of 12 passes for 170 yards, tossed a nine-yard TD strike to Matthew Vallentini for the second score of the game, and Patrick McCarney raced 34 yards into the end zone with a fumble recovery to complete the first quarter outburst. Macaluso hooked up with Buddy Miller on an 81-yard TD pass in the fourth quarter.
