Derrick Freligh and Kenny MacFarlane posted double-double efforts as the unbeaten Spartans defeated Lenape Valley 60-51 for their third straight success in boys’ basketball. MacFarlane finished with a game-high 19 points and pulled down 11 rebounds while Freligh pumped in 16 points and grabbed a dozen rebounds. Chris McCann chipped in with a dozen points and Jake Rogers added 11 as the Spartans had a quartet of players reach double figures. On the ice, Sparta dropped a 3-2 decision to High Point as the Spartans fell to 3-2. The non-league game was played in Hackettstown on Thursday. Matt Tantillo put the Spartans on the board when he scored a short-handed goal two minutes into the second period. Scott DeStefano scored off assists from Chris Bargas and Matt Bowley with five minutes left on the game clock. Sparta surged to a 24-9 lead after eight minutes and upped its advantage to 45-15 by the halftime break as Staci Rossi netted 14 of her game-high 21 points in the first half as the Lady Spartans coasted to a 78-45 win over Lenape Valley in Stanhope. Kelli Keil netted 16 points while Mallori Schuenemen hit for 10 points and Lauren Baker finished with eight. Eunice Lee, Megan Mataga and Lindsay Scott splashed to two victories apiece in spurring Sparta to a 100-70 victory over Kittatinny in a SCIL girls’ swim meet. Lee won the 50 and 100 freestyle races, Mataga won the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke events while Scott was fastest to the finish wall in the 500 freestyle and 100 breaststroke competitions.
