Johnson captures 4th SCIL net title Pope John’s Joy Johnson captured her fourth straight SCIL title on Saturday when she defeated High Point’s Lauren Tracey 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 1 singles championship bracket. Sparta won the other four individual titles to give Spartans their 16th SCIL tourney title. Pope John, which shared the title last year with Sparta, finished second as the Spartans captured their first outright team championship since 2003. Tricia Ashmore, last year’s third-singles champ, won the second singles competition with a 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, 6-4 victory over Pope John’s Kerry McKinley, the defending second singles champion. Michelle Handy, who picked up a first place trophy in last year’s doubles action, breezed to the third singles crown with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over High Point’s Lauren Bayse. Sparta’s top tandem of Carly Mora and Katie Dowd went three sets to defeat High Point’s Kelly Costello and Michelle Moranskey by scores of 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. The No. 2 duo of Sarah Foster and Sarah Hetzler completed the Spartan “Parade of Champions” with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Pope John’s Brianna Denn and Jen Makulowich. Team Scores 1. Sparta 12 2.
