Byram - Coaches, parents, and numerous volunteers helped to make this past spring another winning season for baseball’s Hobb Engler Little League. All 300 members of the Hobb Engler Little League are residents of Byram, N.J. The boys and girls that make up the league are divided into teams based upon their skill level and age, falling into one of six levels, including T-Ball, Instructional, Minors, Majors, Juniors, and Seniors. Supported by a large number of volunteers, with one manager and two coaches dedicated to each team, these young athletes are taught the basic principles of baseball in a safe and fun environment, both during practice sessions and during game time. “I am very proud of all the hard work put into the league by the board of directors, the coaches, and the players themselves,” said League President Lori Grant. “Our goal is to teach them the best we can, while making sure that it is fun for the players.” Grant added that coaches deal with a wide range of skills when it comes to their players - those who possess natural talent, as well as those who express a true love for the game, but who can’t make the great play or get the home run hit. “These are the players who, when they make that great catch or get their first hit, smile the biggest, and that reminds all of us just why we are here.” A mother of four boys, Grant has been involved with the league since 1983. Grant said she watched proudly as her own children made their way through the league’s ranks, and believes every child with a passion for the game should join the league. Grant said she is well aware of all the work that goes into a successful season and recently acknowledged league volunteers, saying, “We have a great league. I’m thankful to all the volunteers - not just the coaches, but also the parents who work behind the scenes collecting sponsors, organizing Opening Day, organizing the umpires, and helping in our refreshment stand.”
