— World Gymnastics Academy of Ringwood claimed first place in the Manhattan Classic on Saturday, Feb. 2.

The Bronze team, competing with teams as far away as Bermuda, put together a team effort to collect the coveted prize. Collecting a fair share of “medal” on the podium were gymnasts Samantha Fahey of Ringwood and Skylar Greenberg of West Milford, who each brought home five medals. Liana Ho of Tuxedo, N.Y. claimed first in vault, while on balance beam, Gabrielle Toledo of Ringwood grabbed second and Shayna Rives of Ringwood claimed third. Rounding out the older group were Elizabeth Maciorowski of Ringwood, and Emmy Glick and Colette Metcalf, both of West Milford.

For the younger Bronze team, Paige Dammers of Ringwood captured four second place medals, including second place all-around. Tying with her for second place on beam was Isabelle Ferreira of West Milford. Isabelle finished fifth in the all-around.

Finishing in the top seven slots in various events were gymnasts Katelyn Lynch of West Milford, Samantha Dammers of Ringwood, and McConn Honor of Tuxedo, N.Y. Joining their teammates with strong showings were Kasia Osuchowski and Shayla Stillman, both of West Milford. Vanessa Fahey of Ringwood was unable to compete due to injuries.

World Gymnastics Academy sent two teams of gymnasts. The Copper team of younger gymnasts has eight competitors. This was their first competition and the young gymnasts were filled with enthusiasm. Alyssa DeGraaf of West Milford took seventh place on uneven bars, to the delight of her coaches and teammates.

“I’m so proud of these girls,” said parent Jenn Rose.

The more experienced Bronze division sent 14, eight of whom have competed on the Bronze level for two years

Coaches Sergei and Inessa Jangols were pleased with the girls’ sportsmanship and grit as they tackled the tough competition and the tougher judges.

“I can’t wait to hang up the banner at the gym,” said gymnast Isabelle Ferreira.
