Here we go, West Milford, here we go!

RUTHERFORD — They did it...again! West Milford's senior Olympics team finished on top of the heap for the third year in a row, this time tying for the top honors with the team from Rutherford.
The games took place in Rutherford last Thursday, May 30, an extremely hot and humid day. But the athletes held tough despite the blazing sun and temperatures in the 90s. Six teams competed, including Pequannock, Randolph, Rutherford, Sparta, Wayne and West Milford.
There were six events in all. Each team puts up four participants for each event. Every point earned goes to the team total. Of the six events, West Milford medaled in four. They took golds in soccer kick, horseshoes and Frisbee golf. The other events are chicken toss, tee ball and basketball toss.
Community Services and Recreation Director Jayme Mulhern said she was so proud of her seniors.
"They did great," said Mulhern. And she was thrilled that her team also won a new event, being named the team with the most spirit. She admits they had some help with that.
"We won that trophy because of our cheer," said Mulhern. "The Rec Department called the school and asked for the cheerleaders to help. They came on their own time and helped us. We won a trophy because of them."
With pom poms in hand, the seniors took to their formation and gave their cheer. "Here we go, West Milford, here we go!"
Mulhern and Gail Kahler, head of the senior services for the township, were both on hand for the day and took part in the cheer. After the big win, the team went to the Elks Lodge to celebrate.
Mulhern said it was a terrific day for everyone who participated. And her team had a little motivation while they were competing: If they came in first again this year, Mulhern promised they would have a float in next year's Memorial Day parade. They took the challenge and will indeed have their own float in the parade in 2014.
This was the 24th annual Olympics. Next year, the 25th anniversary games will be held in Sparta. West Milford is ready for the challenge.
