Braves claim win in first-ever varsity ice hockey match Newton skated to 7-2 victory in its first-ever varsity ice hockey match. The win came against a veteran Hackensack club on the Comets’ home ice at the Ice House in Hackensack. Blake Wolos stamped his name in the Newton history books when he netted the program’s first goal as seven Braves scored. Wolos also picked up an assist on a goal by Zach Hathaway. Newton made it 2-0 with a non-league 7-2 win over High Point which is playing an independent schedule during its initial campaign.Newton’s third game will be against Passaic Valley on Saturday, December 17. Sparta, which also competes in the Blue Division, opened with a 3-2 win over High Point before losing to Vernon 12-0 in non-divisional confrontations. Competing in the Red Division, Vernon lost to Tenafly 3-1 before routing Bayonne 10-2 in divisional action. Pope John, which is a member of the elite Gordon Conference, lost to Don Bosco Prep 3-1 before tying Delbarton 1-1.
