WEST MILFORD – The Highlanders girls lacrosse team came up short in its home opener against Demarest on Wednesday, losing to the Norsemen 8-7 in overtime.
It was a tale of two halves, as West Milford was down 5-1 at the end of the first half before shifting momentum in the second.
The Highlanders outscored Demarest 6-2 in the second half to force overtime, but in the end, it wasn’t enough.
Norsemen player Abby Terner scored the final goal in overtime to give Demarest the sudden-death win.
Senior Mackenzie Keane led West Milford in scoring with a hat trick, while her teammates Cassi Ruegg and Zoe Starr each scored two goals in the losing effort.
The Highlanders will look to rebound from the loss when they take on River Dell next in an away contest on April 2.
