Highlanders go on to college athletic success

By Josh Lashley WEST MILFORD — As a senior infielder for the Rowan University (Glassboro) softball program this spring, Julie Leskanic from West Milford High School started in 47 games and had a .307 batting average. Leskanic tallied 46 hits, including six doubles and six triples. She also collected 20 RBIs and scored 31 runs. The Profs had an overall record of 39-9 and they were 12-6 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. They tallied a 14-3 record on their home field and were 16-2 in game’s contested at neutral locations. Rowan defeated Montclair State to earn the NJAC Tournament championship. In the NCAA Division III Union Regional, the Profs went 3-2 and were ultimately eliminated by Montclair State by a score of 1-0. Let’s take a glance back at other student-athlete’s from West Milford High School who competed in collegiate sports this past spring season. This is the second installation in the series: Andy Gallagher, listed as a journalism major, is on the roster as a junior distance runner for The College of New Jersey (Ewing) men’s outdoor track and field program this spring. Gallagher had his team’s top time all season (9:27.87) in the steeplechase. He also had the third best time of any Lion runner with a mark of 3:59.79 in the 1,500. Dan Hemmerlin was a junior listed as a competitor in jumps for The Richard Stockton College (Galloway) men’s track and field program this past season. Doug Hervey is on the roster as a freshman for the Ramapo College (Mahwah) men’s outdoor track and field team this spring. Hervey is a communication arts major. Harley Masiello was on the roster as a pitcher/outfielder for the Ramapo College softball squad this past season. Masiello, a sophomore biology major, played in 22 games and started in nine of them for the Roadrunners. She recorded two hits and two RBIs. As a pitcher, she posted three victories and tallied 34 strikeouts. Ramapo had an overall team record of 26-13 and was 10-3 on their home field. In the New Jersey Athletic Conference, they had a mark of 10-8. Ryan Sedlacik, was listed as a freshman distance runner for the Rutgers University (Newark) men’s track and field team this past season. Casey Weiss was on the roster as a junior middle distance runner for the Rutgers University (New Brunswick) men’s track and field program this past season.
