Highlanders rope Mustangs, 4-2

Head Coach Brian Jones has to be pleased with the productivity of his first line, the L.A.W. line of Lezette, Atieh, and Williamson. Every game these three forwards are lined up in the official score sheet in various combinations of goals and assists. But surely Jones knows that if the Highlanders are going anywhere in the State Tournament the scoring and consistency has to be spread out among the other two lines that have been somewhat unpredictable lately. Lines two and three delivered a clear message to their leader during the match up against the Montville Mustangs won by the West Milford Highlanders by the score of 4-2. The message was “ Hey Coach, don’t worry about it.” The Mustangs did get on the board first just six minutes in, but from then on it was all Highlanders. After one period West Milford had launched 12 shots, yet the Highlanders trailed 1-0. But early in the second stanza Lezette, Atieh, and Williamson cycled the puck down low for the entire shift until finally at 3:24 Williamson popped over a pass to Atieh for the one-timer to tie it up at one. At the 11:20 mark center Ryan Dixon notched the first of two goals as he slid in the rebound of a Jordan shot made possible by an aggressive play behind the goal line by defenseman Mike Percival. At 4:31 of the third Williamson backhanded in the eventual game winner through the back door by capitalizing on a pretty passing combination by Atieh and Percival. The Mustangs cut the two-goal Highlander lead in half at 9:21 as they took advantage of some sloppy neutral ice passing. But only 39 seconds later, Dixon closed the lid on any thought of a Mustang comeback by capitalizing on a play set up by Percival who earned his third assist of the night. The big defenseman is usually known for his boulder like presence in front of goaltender Sean Ryan but on this play he demonstrated a little fancy footwork as well as some slight of hand. The second place Highlanders (11-5-1) will need the momentum of this solid win to carry them into next week’s showdown with the undefeated Northern White Division leading Ridgewood Maroons, a very skilled team ranked second in northern New Jersey and coached by former Highlander Head Coach Jeff Nyius (‘95-’96). The puck will drop at 8 p.m., Saturday at the Ice Vault in Wayne.
