Hornets win Pal Spring League Basketball championship

WEST MILFORD — On Tuesday, June 13 the number one seeded Lakers met the number two seeded Hornets in the West Milford PAL Basketball League Spring Championships. The Lakers came into the game with a 9-1 record and the Hornets boasted an 8-2 record during the regular season. The Hornets consists of Derek Bull, Dylan Forsythe, Caitlin Hanratty, Maranda Jones, Nick Lima, Rachael Linzalone, Christian Mangiapane, Henry Nowinski and Paul Spada. Point guard Nick Lima came out on fire sinking four-out-of-four 3-point baskets to lead the Hornets to an early 12-4 lead. The Lakers battled back in the second period, but a pesky Hornets defense kept them off their game. At halftime the Hornets lead had been cut to six points. The third period proved to be a turning point in the game. Maranda Jones put on a spectacular defensive effort and helped to shut down the Lakers offense while the Lakers picked up enough team fouls to put the Hornets into a bonus situation. Dylan Forsythe helped keep the Hornets ahead with two three point shots with the help of Christian Mangiapane and Maranda Jones who both added baskets of their own. During the fourth period the Hornets and Lakers battled furiously and with just over a minute left in the game the Lakers hit a three pointer to narrow the lead to three. The Hornets in bounded the ball and worked their way down the court but the Lakers re-bounded the ball. After a Laker time out, they in bounded the ball with eleven seconds left in the game. The ball ended up in the hands of Nick Conlon who attempted to make the three-point shot which would tie the game and send it into overtime. He was denied on a great defensive play by Christian Mangiapane to give the Hornets a 33-30 win.
