Franklin — The First Jack Kurlander Memorial Golf Tournament was held Friday, Oct. 20 at Black Bear Golf Club, in Franklin, and Great Gorge Country Club, in McAfee. A field of 125 men and 35 women competed for prizes and bragging rights for surviving the challenge of a changing weather pattern that day. The day began with mist and drizzle, interrupted by sun, rain and a monsoon-like squall that caught the golfers out on the course. Everyone took the elements in stride and finished with some very respectable scores. The winners in the men’s division were: Wayne Waleck, Dale Kelly, Gerald Dorman and Jerry Grotian at Great Gorge; Don Mattucci, Gary Kitchell, Glen Hanf and Jeff Fletcher at Black Bear. The winners in the women’s division were: Delores Casale and Maureen Cleary at Great Gorge; June Day, Dot Harraka, Lynn Fogarty and Kim Komancik at Black Bear. All the golfers had a chance to win a new car, courtesy of Magarino Ford, by attempting to score a hole-in-one. No one managed to accomplish that feat. Other events included a Longest Drive Contest and a Putting Contest. Jet Blue Airlines sponsored several Closest-to-the-Pin holes. A large array of prizes and awards was presented following a dinner at Black Bear. All participants were on hand to honor Jack Kurlander for his many accomplishments and contributions to the recreation industry in Sussex County. Kurlander built both the Great Gorge and the Hidden Valley Ski Areas, as well as Black Bear Golf Club. He was also instrumental in the development of the other golf courses at Crystal Springs Resort. Proceeds from the tournament are to be used for the construction of the Jack Kurlander Memorial Garden, which will overlook the par-3 seventh hole at Black Bear. The hole will now be called Jack’s Crossing, an appropriate name for the 165-yard, over-the-water shot required to make it safely on the green of this challenging hole. Proceeds will also go into a scholarship fund. The Jack Kurlander Memorial Foundation will award scholarships annually to qualifying candidates at West Milford, Pope John, Sparta, Wallkill Valley, Vernon and other area high schools. Recipients of the awards will demonstrate academic achievement, along with a spirit of entrepreneurship and community involvement.
