Augusta After about two weeks and better than 2400 suggestions, the new name for the team coming to Ross’s Corner this summer has emerged: the Sussex Skyhawks. The team’s name was officially announced last week by Sussex Professional Baseball, an investor group owned and operated by Montclair-based Floyd Hall and his son Larry. The contest received much enthusiasm, team officials said, and the incoming independent Canadian-American League team will soon have a logo as well, said Ben Wittkowski, the Skyhawks’ general manager. The name Skyhawks submitted by Hamburg resident Michael Bruno seemed most apt, in that it referred to both Skylands Park and the many birds in the area. “We just basically kicked around what the best name was. Among the things we looked at was how it (name) relates to the area, how it would translate to a logo which would translate to our uniforms and sales, and the feedback from the community,” explained Wittkowski, who was the general manager of the New Jersey Jackals last year. The Skyhawks received the most votes. “And that made it a no-brainer,” according to Wittkowski. Bruno, who beat out 19 other finalists to claim the grand prize, will receive four season tickets, two airline tickets to anywhere in the contiguous United States, and a team-autographed baseball. The Skyhawks appreciate the efforts of all those who participated in the contest. There are other prizes to come, and anyone who bothered to submit a name in the recent contest will receive a team pin. The top four vote-getters included the Bobcats, Highlanders and Stallions. The enthusiasm the contest generated made for a good feeling from the incoming Can-Am franchise, the team said. “It was extremely exciting to have put that contest together and to have received so many responses. It tells us how much excitement there is for this baseball team coming to Skylands Park,” said Wittkowski.
