Newton - The Newton varsity hockey team defeated High Point, 7-2, in a well-played game in Newburgh, N.Y., on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 10. Co-Captain John Irmiter started the scoring with two goals in the first period. Derek D’Agostino, after assisting on one of Irmiter’s goals in the first, got two of his own in the second, with assists by Blake Wolos and Ed Conrads. In the third period, D’Agostino assisted on a goal by Jonathan Miller, who also picked up an assist on a goal by Conrads. Liam Joyce-Casey finished the scoring for Newton, with an assist by Zach Hathaway. The Newton defense was able to step up and shut down the speedy High Point forwards. Newton forwards, especially Eric Budd, Justin Nunziato and John Schlaffer did an outstanding job fore checking and body checking. High Point’s goals were scored by Josh Armstrong, assisted by Scott Morongell, and Tom Primo, unassisted. Although they had played the night before against Sparta, the High Point skaters still played with intensity throughout the game. Newton and High Point will meet again on Feb. 18 at Chill Out Arena in Hackettstown. Newton’s next game is Dec. 17 versus Passaic Valley at Floyd Hall in Montclair. Their first home game will be on Dec. 23 at Chill Out, also against Passaic Valley. For information, visit online at newtonbravesicehockey.com.
