This year it took a little more to make a champion in the Sparta Women’s softball league. The women in this league have always wanted a playoff format to determine a champion, and this year, they finally got one. There are ten teams in the league and the top four advanced to the 2006 playoffs. Those teams were Ogdensburg and Precision Plumbing tied for first place during regular season play, Eleven Mane and Remax. Any one of these four teams were capable of winning the championship, but Ogdensburg prevailed. In the first playoff game Remax seeded fourth prevailed over first seed Precision Plumbing. In the second game, second-seeded Ogdensburg prevailed beating the third seed, Eleven Mane. In the championship game between Ogdensburg and Remax which proved to be two very competetive teams battling to the end Ogdensburg won 5-1 making the 2006 champions in the first ever playoff format. Ogdensburg’s runs were scored by Dani Gramignano, Denise Haab, Kathy Nann and Carole Olinger, with Joanne Hoertel, Becky Moreno and Sue Killacky picking up the RBIs. The winning pitcher was Patty Egan. The team, which finished the season with a 15-1 record and had won a prior championship in 2002, was presented with a first place trophy following the championship game.
