Project Children 5K On a warm Thursday evening, Lake Hopatcong’s Kevin McCormick led a quartet of local residents to the finish line of the Seventh Annual Project Children 5K Run. The 15-year-old McCormick completed the fast, flat and shady 3.1-mile course through the South Mountain Reservation in Maplewood, in a time of 20:20 as he finished 22nd in the field of 219 runners who braved the heat for a worthy cause. His mom, 42-year-old Peggy McCormick, was runner-up in the women’s 40 to 49-year-old division when she was timed in 25:04. At the conclusion of the event, McCormick picked up her second place award when the competitors went to the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh club in West Orange to toast the Leprechauns. The revenue from the annual event provides funding for Project Children that brings Catholic and Protestant children from troubled areas of Northern Ireland to the United States for six weeks during the summer.
