SPARTA - Colleen Boyle and Vicki Vara, owners of New Image Body Center Pilates studio, finished the New York City Marathon Nov. 6. Among 37,000 athletes, they completed the 26.2-mile race through all five NYC boroughs. The marathon began with a cannon shot at 10:10 a.m. in Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island. The runners crossed the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge into Brooklyn, made their way into Queens crossing the Pulaski Bridge, and then into Manhattan, greeting thousands of cheering spectators on First Ave. The crowds cheered runners up Manhattan into the Bronx and then back down Fifth Ave., finishing at Tavern on the Green in Central Park. Boyle and Vara drew inspiration from the fans as they called their names, which were written on their arms. They also had many friends and family cheering them on along the way. Thanks to an advanced chip tracking system attached to their sneakers, friends and family could keep track of their times. This was Vara’s first marathon. She finished the race with a time of 4:42. Boyle previously ran the N.J. Marathon in April. She finished the NYC marathon with a time of 5:00. The NYC Marathon is one of the world’s most famous road races, drawing more than 85,000 applicants. The race attracts many world-class professional athletes, as well as amateur runners, not only for the prize money, but also for the chance to excel before two million cheering spectators and 260-million worldwide television viewers. Both Boyle and Vara said that crossing the finish line in Central Park was one of the great thrills of their lifetime. The New Image Body Center is located at 13 Main St. in Sparta.
