Sparta family making trails in national snowboarding competitions

Sparta - Justin and Kevin Mattice, and their father Michael, have their sights set on Lake Tahoe, California the end of this month. Not for vacation, but for the annual national championship of the United States Amateur Snowboarding Association (USASA). The USASA is made up of members from 40 states and 36 regional series from coast to coast. The Mattices are members of the Mid-Atlantic Snowboard Series (M.A.S.S.) and have qualified for the nationals for the past three years. Top riders from each series qualify to compete in the annual national championships. The events include boardercross, slalom, giant slalom, slopestyle and halfpipe. Justin, 13, is in the Breaker Boys group (ages 12-13) and specializes in boardercross, slalom and giant slalom. Kevin, 15, is in the Youth Men category (ages 14-15) and enjoys slopestyle, boardercross, slalom and giant slalom. The brothers started snowboarding seven years ago and soon their father was taking them to competitions and snowboarding along with them. Michael is in the Legend Men category (ages 40-49) and competes in all categories except halfpipe. The Mattices have qualified for the 2006 M.A.S.S. National Team and will go on to compete in Tahoe. Justin is ranked Number 1 in slalom and giant slalom and Number 2 in boardercross. Kevin is ranked Number 1 in boardercross, Number 2 in slalom, Number 3 in giant slalom and Number 6 in slopestyle. Michael is Number 1 in all four disciplines.
