Sparta - It was a good weekend for the Sparta High School hockey team. On Friday, the Spartans skated to a thrilling 4-3 win over division rival Depaul Catholic as they battled back from a one-goal deficit with fewer than four minutes to go in the final period. Sophomore winger Mike Postorino tied it at 3-3 with 3:46 remaining with a wrist shot from what seemed like an impossible angle just outside the right goal line. Then senior captain, Nick Podkowik, banged the game-winner home with just 24 seconds remaining in the game. Podkowik had two goals and two assists, while Matt Tantillo also scored for the Spartans. Senior goalie Mike Ryan had 13 saves in the win. On Saturday night, Sparta overpowered an injury-plagued Hackensack team 7-1. Once again Podkowik was the offensive story of the game, scoring a team record five goals. For the weekend, Podkowik chalked up seven goals and three assists for a total of ten points. Kyle Zimmerman and Mike Postorino also scored a goal each, while Mike Ryan registered 10 saves in net. The Spartans’ weekend victories put their overall record at 6-5-1. Their next game is a rematch with Depaul Catholic on Saturday, Jan. 28, at the Ice Vault in Wayne.
