Sparta - Sparta resident Chris Halkyard recently joined the event committee for Cerebral Palsy of North Jersey’s annual football tournament fundraiser, scheduled for June 11 at Giants Stadium. The flag and touch football tournament, in which each team must raise at least $1,000 for the cerebral palsy agency to participate, regularly attracts 300 to 400 players and raises more than $30,000 to support the agency’s programs for infants, children and adults with disabilities. Halkyard’ daughter, Lianna, is a student at the agency’s Horizon School in Livingston. “We are so fortunate to have parents like Chris,” said Alan Mucatel, executive director of Cerebral Palsy of North Jersey. “Having the support of families like the Halkyards, who are willing to become so actively involved in our events, helps to strengthen our programs at many different levels.” Participation in this year’s tournament will be limited to the first 24 teams to register. Interested teams should contact Cerebral Palsy of North Jersey 973-763-9900, ext. 601. The agency serves more than 1,000 families each year through a variety of programs, including Horizon School and Horizon High School, which serve more than 130 children from age three to 21 with multiple disabilities; three adult day programs that serve more than 140 individuals with developmental disabilities; an early intervention program that serves more than 400 infants directly in their homes; two group homes that provide residents with around-the-clock care; a community therapy program that serves almost 200 students in 33 public schools; and a specialized, 24 unit, apartment complex.
