Vernon surged to a 22-11 lead after eight minutes and coasted to a 62-53 victory over High Point as the Vikings posted their first win of the season after dropping their opener. Balanced scoring was the key to the Vikings’ success, as Nick Sires scored a team-high 14 points with the trio of Charles Drinkard, Jeff Moen and Jeremy Palmieri chipping in with 11 points apiece. Two days later the Vikings were edged 62-20 by Jefferson despite a 20-point effort by Drinkard. Palmieri added 14 points and Sires scored 11. Alicia Yaccarino was on target from down town to no avail, as Vernon fell to Jefferson 38-27 in a SCIL girls’ basketball confrontation on Thursday in Vernon. Yaccarino launched four successful three-pointers, finishing with 13 points. She also had four steals. Kellyann Tomasula, Kim Tomasula, Brittany Lukasik and Amy Bravenboer swam to victory in the opening event, the 200-meter medley relay, but Vernon dropped a 91-79 decision to Pope John in an early season showdown of unbeaten teams. Kellyann Tomasula won the 200 individual medley and 100 freestyle events and swam the anchor leg on the Lady Vikings’ 400-meter freestyle quartet. Hillary Barrett outlasted the field in the 500-meter freestyle, Ananlise Jelinek sprinted to a first place effort in the 50-meter freestyle and Lukasik won the 100-meter butterfly.
