WEST MILFORD With unseasonably cool temperatures, perfect for football season, head coach Shawn Poppe lead the West Milford Highlanders to a 22-9 victory over counterpart Ken Timmer’s visiting Caldwell Chiefs. The Highlanders 2006 campaign got off to a rocky start when Caldwell’s offense drove down the field to the 18-yard line. West Milford buckled down and kept the Chiefs out of the end zone, but Caldwell’s Michael Martoglio nailed a field goal to give his squad a 3-0 advantage with a little over two minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Highlanders took the lead before the half, however, as quarterback Jim Harvey ripped a 10-yard bullet to Mike Van Hooker for a touchdown. Paul Fogg finished the extra point kick to give the home crowd a 7-3 lead. The third quarter featured strong defense from both teams as neither offense could get much of anything going. But the flood gates opened in the fourth quarter when Chiefs quarterback Ryan Redford lofted a 10-yard touchdown strike to James Bliss to take the lead 9-7. After the extra point attempt failed, the West Milford offense went to work, capping an impressive drive with a 5-yard touchdown run by Mike Van Hooker. Highlander Brian Mizerek shot a 3-yard two point conversion pass to Matt Gaspaicin to give the Highlanders a 15-9 with two minutes remaining in the game. Not to be left out, the defense came up with a big interception, as Jamal Donald picked one and returned it 47-yards for the insurance score. Fogg nailed his second kick attempt of the night to afford his squad their 22-9 margin of victory.
