Wolverines 11U beat Sparta

    West Milford — On Friday, April 28, the West Milford Wolverines 11U Baseball Club pounded Sparta 15-2 in their Cerbo Spring League matchup. The club improved their record to 2-0 for the season. The Wolverines’ pitching staff combined on a two-hitter, led by Andrew Clifford (2-IP, 5-K, 0-H), Marc-Anthony Gonzalez (1-IP, 3K, 0-H, 0-R), Zane Yuhas (1-IP, 3-K, 0-H, 0-R), Stephen Cuccio (1-IP, 2-K, 0-H, 0-R), Nick Conlon (1-IP, 1-K, 0-H, 0-R), and Greg Tompkins (1-IP, 1-K). West Milford’s offense got 13 hits, while earning 10 walks. In the top of the first inning, Greg Tompkins’ bunt single was followed by a long RBI double by Conlon to give West Milford a 1-0 lead. Dominick Alheidt then hit a long fly to right field that was dropped, allowing Forsythe to score. In the fourth frame, Evan Rapp’s double was followed by Conor Labita’s sacrifice bunt to put a Wolverine on third with one out. Greg Tompkins’ ground ball was then booted, allowing Rapp to score. After Clifford reached on a base on balls, Conlon singled to score Clifford and give West Milford a 5-1 lead. In the sixth inning, Dillon Forsyth led off with his first career homerun. Eric Tompkins walked, then stole second base. Stephen Cuccio hit into a fielder’s choice, allowing Tompkins to score. Cuccio earned his way around the bases to make the score 8-1. In the top of the seventh stanza, Clifford reached base on a walk. Conlon stroked his third consecutive hit of the day to put runners on the corners. Yuhas then hit a two RBI double into the gap, scoring both Conlon and Greg Tompkins. Brian Harr’s fielder’s choice groundout allowed Yuhas to score. Steven Sweigart followed with a single to score Harr. A Forsythe walk pushed across another run, then was followed by Zach Day’s RBI single. Cuccio finished off the scoring by singling to centerfield.
