Students at St. Joseph School filled their hallways with the color red on Valentine’s Day in support of a special program run by the American Red Cross. Students were able to “dress down” (not wear their uniforms) on Valentine’s Day and were asked to wear red as a sign of support for the American Red Cross Measles Program that seeks to vaccinate children in Africa against measles. The students raised $203 on February 14. In addition, the students recently attended an American Red Cross workshop conducted by John Hegrenes of the Wayne, N.J. American Red Cross chapter. The students learned about the role the American Red Cross plays in helping those in need. They were also asked to create an “Emergency Preparedness Plan” with their families. Emphasis was placed on making a plan as a family for what they would do if a disaster occurred where they live. Next, students were urged to create home kits that included essential items like water, food, flashlights, medications, battery-operated radios etc. Hegrenes urged the students to become trained in first aid, volunteer at the American Red Cross, and to give blood when they were old enough.
