West Milford High School students participated in the annual Princeton Model United Nations Conference for the first time in the school’s history. The conference was hosted by Princeton University’s International Relations Council, a subsidiary of the American Whig-Cliosophic Society, America’s oldest college-level political, literary, and debating society. The conference was held at the Westin Princeton at Forrestal Village on November 11-13, 2005. Teens from the United States, Hong Kong, Venezuela, and Canada participated in the weekend-long event. The student teams debated several global issues in regular and special sessions. The students in the United Nation’s Security Council debated until 11 o’clock each night. On Saturday night, the members of the Security Council were called out of bed at midnight and debated an issue until five o’clock in the morning. The goal was to simulate a real life situation and demonstrate how world events do not stop even while you are sleeping. 23 West Milford students participated and were credited for passing several resolutions throughout the weekend. Sophomores Thomas Enering and Corey Van Clief and senior Scott Brewer received honorable mentions at the awards ceremony for their leadership skills in their committees. “We are very proud of our students who did an outstanding job in their first major conference. They successfully debated students from around the world at Princeton which will give them confidence in the next meeting,” said Model UN Advisor, Greg Matlosz. The next conference for the West Milford Model UN team will be held at St. Peter’s College, Jersey City during the second week of March 2006.
