West milford For the fourth time since late February fire broke out in vacant homes in the Upper Greenwood Lake community of West Milford. The two most recent blazes occurred on April 6, at 161 Greenwood Lake Road, and on April 10 at 343 Lakeshore Drive. In all instances the fires erupted in vacant homes in the early hours of the morning. James Wilson, chief assistant prosecutor for Passaic County, verified that fires in all four unoccupied Upper Greenwood Lake structures are being looked at by his office in conjunction with the West Milford police and fire department. Fire Commissioner Edward Steines reported that Upper Greenwood Lake, Greenwood Forest, West Milford and Macopin fire companies responded with Highland Lakes on stand-by and Ringwood covering for Greenwood Forest. No injuries have been reported. “We’ve been lucky. So far, so good,” Commissioner Steines said. Annie Ferreira, wife of Upper Greenwood Lake firefighter Mike Ferreira, said she worries for the well-being of her husband and all the emergency personnel. She reported that when there is a structure fire it not only involves the fire companies but the police and first aid squads must also respond. Citing the quick response and team work performed by the various fire companies and emergency services, she said she is proud of all of them. “Every time my husband and our friends respond to a fire, they put their lives on the line,” she said. “It is a brotherhood; they are all my family,” she added.
