West Milford n On Friday, June 1 at approximately 9:30 p.m., the West Milford Police arrested 10 juveniles, all West Milford Township High School students between the ages of 14 and 17. They were all charged with underage possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages. They were released to the custody of their parents pending a hearing in the Passaic County Family Court. Earlier in the day, the police received information that there was going to be a large party involving juveniles and alcoholic beverages. The party was to take place on a construction site off of Ridge Road. Based on the information received, the police conducted a surveillance of the property. Police learned that young people began arriving in the area after 7 p.m. The subjects barricaded the entry road to the construction site with a large drainage pipe and some tree branches in an effort to keep the police from coming down to the site. Upon the arrival of police at the scene, approximately 20 to 25 juveniles were present around a camp fire with several cases of beer on hand. Ten of the juveniles were detained at the scene. The rest fled on foot. In a press release this week, the West Milford Police said they will continue to proactively enforce underage alcohol possession and consumption laws and prosecute anyone who violates these statutes, including those that provide alcohol to underage persons. In an effort to protect the well being and lives of the youths of West Milford Township, the Police Department urged parents to discuss the dangers of alcohol and drug use with their children, and be cognizant of their activities and whereabouts at all times.
