“There is a good reason they call these ceremonies commencement exercises.’ Graduation is not the end; it is the beginning.” Orrin Hatch West Milford It was hot and humid on Tuesday evening, thunderstorms threatened and so West Milford High School’s 2010 graduation ceremony, slated to be at the West Milford High School football field, was moved inside to the gymnasium. There were 321 graduates, each having three guest tickets to the event. In case you don’t want to do the math, that’s about 1300 people crammed into a non-air-conditioned environment, yet most were smiling. The graduates lined up and filled the hallway behind the gym, excited and happy. The end of their West Milford educational experience was now at hand. They entered the gym to thunderous applause. Principal Maureen Bernstock reminded the students that 13 years ago they started on the path that led to this momentous night. During the last four years, she said, they have forged friendships, faced disappointments and found out for themselves what matters most. For 17-year old graduate, Kayla Vanderbeek, this night was the stepping off point to her dream of becoming a special education teacher. Although it was a “bit hot” in the gym, it was a memorable time, she said. Vanderbeek participated in Project Graduation, the after-party held this year at the YMCA in Summit. Vanderbeek will be working this summer as a teacher’s assistant at a special education school and then will head off to the University of Delaware. She will carry two majors, elementary and special education, specializing in learning disabilities. Graduations are new beginnings - but also endings. “All my friends are going to community colleges, but I’ll keep my friends and keep in touch,” she said. She thanks the teachers and staff at West Milford High School for all their hard work in preparing her for college. And so one door closes for the graduates and their families, and another door opens. The future is there for the taking. “Shoot for the moon.
