The shelter is bursting at the seams

WEST MILFORD — The West Milford Animal Shelter is currently filled to capacity with 90 cats and kittens and 12 dogs. These animals came into the shelter as either strays or were released to the shelter by their owners. One of the cats available for adoption is Shippy, a black and white male cat that came in as a stray. He was living in the wooded area around the Department of Public Works building next to the shelter. It is not unusual for stray cats to hang around this area because they are attracted by the cats in the shelter and the possibility of finding food. The shelter’s volunteers regularly set-up Have-A-Heart traps to try and catch these strays. Luckily for Shippy, he was one of the ones they were able to catch. Like many strays, Shippy was in poor physical condition and very thin. He was missing patches of fur and had an old eye injury. It has taken him many months to recover. His fur has grown back but his sight in the injured was permanently damaged. He is now living in the shelter’s cattery. A separate building where cats are not kept in cages but are allowed to roam free, lounge on shelves and bask in the sun. He is one of the first cats to greet visitors to the cattery and will follow them around, seeming to say “pick me.” For more information contact the shelter at 973-728-2859 or visit www.westmilfordanimalshelter.org.
