Teams to answer questions on books they’ve read WEST MILFORD Margaret Mack, library media specialist at Maple Road School, recently planned and organized “Battle of the Books” competitions. The “Battle of the Books” is a reading enrichment program designed for students in third and fourth grades and participation is entirely voluntary. This reading enrichment program was made possibly by a grant from the West Milford Education Foundation, which was awarded to Mack. Grant funds were used to purchase five sets of books, ribbons and medals, trophies, and award certificates. Teams of students read selected books on their own and on the day of the “battle” compete against each other by answering questions in a game show format. Over the past seven months, 29 third and fourth graders on five different teams read 15 books. During the playoff competition on May 25, each team answered ten questions about the books. Points were awarded for correct titles and bonus points for the correct authors. The two teams with highest number of points competed against one another on June 1. The winning students in the playoffs were Krystal Affinito, Michael Galioto, Katie Kreutz, Kyle Panariello, Krystyna Resavy, and Jeremy Scott on Team 2, and Megan Chirichella, Alexa Crisafulli, Jennifer Hruby, Nicole Janz, Anna Kovach, and Noah Provenzano on Team 5. They all received ribbons and medals. Team 5 was the winner in the final battle and each team member also received a “Battle of the Books” trophy. The following students also participated in the “Battle of the Books” throughout the school year. Team 1: Emily Bottner, Jennifer Coyle, Sara Foley, Kelsey Krieger, Danielle Logan, and Gillian Todd. Team 3: Kevin McDonald, Sophia Metcalf, Samantha Stanton, Dillon Van Wart, and Nicole Weis. Team 4: Amber Allen, Makenzie Brady, Kristen Dressler, Jordan Jansen, Samantha Mauer, and Mariah Wood. All students were presented with award certificates at the End of the Year Award Assembly.
