Tiny cat looking for big heart

On Thursday, March, 15, 2007 a very large man wearing a red vest and carrying a very small gray and white cat walked into the West Milford Animal Shelter. He was a West Milford Township employee. He and his co-workers had found a cardboard box outside of the gate at the DPW/ Recycling Center. Inside the box was the very small gray and white cat. Someone had just left the box containing the cat outside the gate. The cat was very lucky to have been found. The cat was very easy for them to handle so they removed the cat from the box and went to the shelter. There the cat was put into a large, clean cage and given food and water but was not interested in eating or drinking. When it was determined, that the cat was a female, she was named Sherrie after her rescuer’s girlfriend. Sherrie’s gums were very inflamed and it was difficult for her to eat. But in spite of the pain in her mouth, she was very gentle and quietly loving. Her mouth has healed and she has been spayed. Sherrie is about a year old and is very tiny and slim. She now needs a home that is not a cage or a cardboard box. Sherrie is not the first animal to be left at the gate. Other animals have been left in boxes or carriers or simply tied to the gate. About two years ago, a carrier containing a litter of kittens was thrown over the back fence of the shelter. It landed on one end and the kittens were stuck in a pile inside. They were too light to push the carrier into a sitting position. For information on Sherrie any other pets for adoption call the shelter at 973-728-2859.
