Tour a Christmas the old fashioned way

RINGWOOD —Some 30 years ago a gentleman who belonged to the New Jersey Highlands Historical Society asked his wife, who belonged to the West Milford Women’s Club, if her group would like to decorate the Hewitt mansion, known as the Ringwood Manor for the holidays. The women’s group did, and tradition was born. This year, the group’s 18 members adorned 10 of the mansion’s first floor rooms in mostly handmade, historical and/or loaned antique Christmas decorations. West Milford Girl Scout Troop 125 decorated one of the many Christmas trees in the house and two of the girls (pictured on right) joined the women’s group by dressing in period costumes and leading tours through the home. The mansion was built in the 1700s by the Ryerson family and was evetually donated to the State of New Jersey in 1939 by the Hewitt family. Between those two owners, however, a man named Cooper bought the house, 33,000 acres of land, all of Ryerson’s iron mines and forges for the sum of $100,000. Tours of the house are co-sponsored by the Woman’s Club of West Milford and North Jersey Highlands Historical Society. This weekend is the last for the Victorian Christmas tours. They run from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
