West Milford - A 27-year-old township man was killed when the car in which he was riding struck a rock wall near 760 East Shore Road on Friday, Sept. 5, at 1:45 a.m. The police dispatcher received a number of 9-1-1 calls reporting the sound of a loud impact. Some said it sounded like a motor vehicle collision. Police Officer Casey Casbarro was the first officer at the scene. An initial investigation revealed a 1998 black Volkswagon operated by Avery Meyer, age 18, of 338 Lakeshore Drive, was traveling south on East Shore Road. The passenger in the vehicle was Jay DeRaffele. The vehicle crossed the centerline, left the roadway and struck a rock embankment and a rock wall before coming to rest on the northbound lane and shoulder. DeRaffele was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, Meyer is charged with death by auto as well as driving under the influence and several motor vehicle offenses. If he is found guilty, he will face between five and 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $150,000. Bail has not been set at the time of this press release. Meyer was arraigned and release on $100,000 bond, with the 10 percent option. The West Milford Crash Investigation Unit and the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office are continuing the investigation of the collision.
